Dynamic Data Warehousing of Semi-Structured Data with Snowflake

Here at Full 360 we consider ourselves “data centric… technology agnostic”. When faced with a data problem we try to identify the software solution that will best handle our client’s needs, as opposed to a “one hammer fits all” approach of using only tools that we know. That being said… over time we have developed preferences for certain products and providers. These preferences have grown from our experience doing BI for 15+ years, and understanding the problems that emerge over the lifetime of the application. Our primary preference for reporting on “big data” is the use of columnar databases. We already have what we consider to be the two strongest columnar database options under our banner of expertise… and have found that most of the other options in the marketplace aren’t worth pursuing because they don’t bring anything new to the table… or are simply columnar options for enterprise RDBMS offerings.

Earlier in 2014, Snowflake Computing contacted us about a sneak preview of their SaaS columnar data warehouse offering. After seeing the demo I was immediately excited and took them up on their offer for a free account so that I could give it a spin. Now that the product has become publicly available I am free to share my excitement with you!

Amazon Redshift - Review and First Impressions

As an AWS Premier partner, and the only partner with expertise in columnar databases in the cloud, Full360 was given earliest preview access to Amazon Redshift, the new cloud-based columnar data warehouse offering which was announced at the Re:Invent conference in November. Here are some of my initial impressions and experiences working with it over the past month.

re:Invent - AWS Amazes in First User Conference

    AWS Re:Invent User Conference

The first AWS Re:Invent User Conference last week was a fascinating show, not so much for the novelty of a user conference – all major players have one these days – but for some of the facts that emerged from both Amazon and industry analysts.

Real World Vertica Performance at Full360 via Chef

As a boutique, BI solutions integrator, Full360 sometimes receives requests from medium sized, prospective clients to do a proof of concept of our elasticBI platform, a stack consisting of Jaspersoft BI reporting combined with the Vertica columnar database.  Typically in these cases, the prospect is comparing several BI solutions, looking for the one that will best fit their needs.  The bigger players in the space often have more resources to throw at building a POC… usually part of a presales technical team.

The Next Gen BI & PM Platform

My brother Doc gave me some advice that I take to heart. Don’t tell people what you’re going to do. Do something, and then tell them what you’ve done. It’s very good advice. But I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t speculate about the future and what I’m going to do next.

HowTo: Use the Google Authenticator as a virtual MFA Device on the Amazon AWS Console

Amazon has supported the use of a hardware based MFA device. But the issue we have had as a firm that deals with many Amazon accounts, carrying 14 or more devices is just not practical.

    Integrating AWS CloudFormation and Chef

The cloud ecosystem was a-thundering this Friday with Amazon Web Services’ announcement on CloudFormation. Much of it positive, and a whole lot said about AWS whacking at the partner ecosystem. The twitter pundits who probably haven’t used CloudFormation, Chef or Puppet were quick to claim that CloudFormation is a replacement. At initial glance I thought so as well, but then I looked under the covers and quickly realized that to the contrary, CloudFormation will actually simplify and make our recipes more portable.

Migrating a Linux S3 Based AMI to an EBS Based AMI

While we have been booting from EBS a month after it came out using pivot_root - most of our implementations are based on a couple of AMIs and many different EBS snapshots and volumes. We were nonetheless happy to see Amazon’s announcement to allow AMIs to boot from AMIs, it makes some of our scripts much simpler. I put this article together to show migrating an existing Linux AMI to EBS can be a trivial task.
